Nigeria deserves better governance – Obasanjo

TABLE
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday said Nigeria does not deserve its present position, urging Nigerians to allow sound judgment to prevail when voting during next month’s general election.
The former president lamented that the nation bleeds under the yoke of “crippling poverty, sheer impunity, economic downturn and insecurity,” saying leaders elected to make things better for the people and do otherwise would “give account to God.”
Obasanjo spoke when the Southwest women leaders including the Iyaloja – General of Nigeria, Chief Folashade Tinubu – Ojo, visited him at his Presidential Hilltop Estate, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Monday morning.
He said: “Nigeria does not deserve the situation it found itself. Our nation bleeds in poverty, economic downturn, sheer impunity and insecurity.”
The visiting women leaders, which included the National President (Women Wing), Christian Association of Nigeria, were led to Obasanjo’s home by the Iyalode of Yorubaland, Chief Alaba Lawson.

INEC to publish voters list on Tuesday

inec

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will on Tuesday publish the voters register – one month to the election -  in line with the Electoral Act.
Mr. Kayode Idowu, INEC Chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega’s spokesman, said yesterday that the register will be on display to allow for public scrutiny for claims and objections.
The publication of the register will end the anxiety over the list. Those who have not registered will no longer be able to do so before the elections.
Idowu said those who registered during the continous Voter Registration (CVR) and those whose names are on the register but yet to pick up their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), will still be free to have the cards until the end of the month.
The elections are slated for February 14 and 28.
The list will be published in line with Section 19(i) of the Electoral Act, 2010 as amended.
Section 9(5) of the Act also forbids INEC from registering any person not later than 30 days before any election. Section 19(5) directs the commission to publish names of those expected to participate in the April 14th and 15th general elections forthwith.
The section reads: “Subject to the provisions of section 9(5) of this Act, the Commission shall, by notice, appoint a period of not less than five days and not exceeding 14 days, during which a copy of the voters’ register for each local government,  Area Councillor ward shall be displayed for public scrutiny and during which period any objection or complaint in relation to names omitted or included in the voters’ register or relation to any necessary correction, shall be raised or filed.”
Section 9(5) states: “The registration of voters, updating and revision of the register of voters under the section shall stop not later than 30days before any election covered by this Act”
INEC is contemplating carving out constituencies for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) among other possible options, to ensure their participation in the elections.
The committee set up to look into various possibilities has submitted a report after working for two weeks.
IDP camps have been created in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states, which have been under attack of insurgents.
Idowu said: “One option is to designate a safe haven as a constituency, because the law prescribes constituency and residency voting. You can designate a safe area as a safe haven and invite everybody to come to that constituency from wherever they dwell within or outside the country to come over and cast their votes.
“If you have possibility of IDP camps being homogenous in terms of where people migrated from, you can move the polling units and get them to vote. So there are many options that the security can work with but essential it will still need security cover to do these things.”
Jega has been invited by the House of Representatives to explain the plan for the elections.
The lawmakers are concerned about the chances of the country’s 3.3 million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) voting in the elections.
The meeting has been fixed for January 20.
The Chairman, House Committee on Electoral Matters, Jerry Manwe, the INEC boss and his team are expected to elaborate on INEC’s level of preparedness.
Funding, security and franchise of IDPs as well as other sundry matters will be discussed.

Buhari: Jonathan must go

Buhari 3

Before thousands of cheering party faithful and ordinary folks, All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari yesterday opened his campaign, with a promise to tackle corruption, fight insecurity and revive the economy.
The former Head of State declared the level of corruption as “intolerable”, adding that the President Goodluck Jonathan administration must go.
Also yesterday in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, Gen. Buhari said: “We have reached a stage where change has to come. PDP must go. Enough is enough.”
The campaign took off at the 40,000-seating capacity Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Igwuruta, near the Port Harcourt International Airport in Rivers State. It was attended by over 100,000 people, who defied the scorching sun to join the singing, drumming and dancing.
Bu the ceremony has a tinge of tragedy.
As Gen. Buhari’s supporters were moving to the stadium from Asari-Toru (Kalabari) and Khana (Ogoni) Local Government Areas of Rivers State, thugs believed to be working for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) shot at them. One person was critically injured and hospitalised. Police spokesperson Muhammad Kidaya Ahmad, who confirmed the incident, said the command was investigating the attack.
House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, who is also the party’s governorship candidate in Sokoto State, said Nigerians did not deserve President Goodluck Jonathan, but a better leadership in Gen. Buhari.
The Director-General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi,  said members PDP believe in guns, but he and other APC members believe in God and man. Jonathan’s administration, he said, would not be able to protect Nigerians.
APC National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who received PDP members, who defected to the APC at the event, after presenting the party’s  flag to the Rivers governorship candidate, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, assured all that when elected as president, Gen. Buhari would tackle the Boko Haram insurgency, ensure discipline and regular electricity supply, provide security and wipe out corruption.
Immediately after the rally, which was transmitted live on major television networks  Gen. Buhari and members of his campaign team moved to Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
The Port Harcourt rally was attended by Gen. Buhari’s running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN; the party’s Deputy Chairman Chief Segun Oni; Rivers Chairman Chief Davies Ibiamu Ikanya; Amaechi’s wife Dame Judith; Peterside’s running mate, Honourable Asita and wife, Elima.
Other dignitaries included Governors Babatunde Fashola (Lagos); Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun); Rochas Okorocha (Imo); and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (Kano); former Ekiti Governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi and Mr. Audu Ogbeh.
Also there were Senators Chris Ngige and Olorunnimbe Mamora; APC’s governorship candidate in Kaduna State Nasir El-Rufai; former Ekiti Governor Niyi Adebayo, House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who later joined the Masters of Ceremonies (MCs); and an ex-Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, among other eminent personalities.
Gen. Buhari said: “We congratulate the Governor of Rivers State (Amaechi) profusely for being the Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Organisation. I thank you  very much for accepting the responsibility to work with our great party.
“Amaechi has made enormous sacrifice. He earned it. He worked for it and I thank him for accepting it. He got it through a lot of hard work. The way Amaechi mobilises people shows that he is the right choice.
“Let us make sure that our votes count. The problem we are facing today is the problem of security and economy. We have gathered competent hands to manage the economy and tackle insecurity. The level of corruption in Nigeria is intolerable and we will make sure we succeed in fighting corruption when we get there. I wish Nigerians the best of luck and we believe in one indivisible Nigeria. I appeal to you to mobilise yourselves to ensure that the end justifies the means. I also urge you to collect your PVCs (Permanent Voter Cards) to enable you to vote in order to bring in the change we have been talking about.”
Amaechi was unsparing of President Jonathan, First Lady, Dame Patience, who is an indigene of Okrika in Rivers State and the PDP governorship candidate, Chief Nyesom Wike, who is the immediate past Minister of State for Education.
Amaechi said: “I thank God for this opportunity. I never knew I would be governor. Today, I am governor by the grace of God. I have stayed in office till 2015. By this time last year, the men who thought they were God thought I would have been out of office. By this time last year, men had collected money to remove us from office, but the God we worship never allowed it to happen. Now, they are the people struggling. We told them there will be this time, when they will be looking for our votes.
“I want to thank all of you and thank Rivers people, for accepting to make me your governor. I may not have been the best governor you have ever seen. I am not a perfect man at all, because I am human.
“When we came, we addressed insecurity. In the past, we could not have had our rally here. We are gradually going back to that. I hear today that members of the APC from Asari-Toru and Khana Local Government Areas (of Rivers State) were shot at on their way to this place (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium). The PDP members believe in guns. We believe in God and man. We shall stand and face their bullets. We shall stand and face their guns. The fact that they shot you brings to the fore the argument we put forward that currently, the government in power cannot protect you and I. If the government could protect you and I, why were we shot at? Who bought guns for those people, who shot at our members?
“I’m assuring you as your governor that I will continue to stand by you. They will do nothing, if we all stand together. You know the story of the broom. You can break a broom. You cannot break them when they are together. That is why APC has brought the symbol of a broom to our party. It is not enough to gather. Go and get your PVCs and vote for all APC candidates, beginning from Gen. Muhammadu Buhari; his vice; Rivers governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside and his running mate Honourable Asita. We will make sure they win.”
Tambuwal, who described Amaechi as the lion from the Delta, spoke of better life for Nigerians from May 29 when the candidates of the APC, especially Gen. Buhari, would be in office, through the massive votes of Nigerians and the grace of God.
The speaker said: “When I defected to the APC (from the PDP last year), many people were surprised. With the privileged position as Speaker (of the House of Representatives) for three and a half years, we oversight the executive (arm of government). What we saw and are still seeing are mind-boggling. We do not deserve the kind of leadership we have at the centre. Nigeria deserves a better leadership in Buhari. His records speak for him. We are today bedevilled by insecurity and corruption. Nigerians should know where to cast their votes.
“Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, by God’s grace, shall be inaugurated as Nigeria’s President on May 29, 2015. Nigerians will come out overwhelmingly to vote for all the candidates of the APC.
“I am impressed by the large crowd (at the stadium). I wish to thank Governor Amaechi for making Dr. Dakuku Peterside the governorship candidate of the APC and Hon. Asita his running mate. They are currently members of the House of Representatives. This is a National Assembly project in Rivers State. We shall support them.”
Odigie-Oyegun described as unimpressive, Jonathan’s performance. This, he said, has made change on May 29 imperative.
He said: “The whole of Nigeria is jealous of Rivers State. This is the centre of change. General Buhari is a straightforward leader, strong in character, reliable and incurruptible. General Buhari and Prof. Osinbajo were carefully chosen. Hardwork pays and brings success. General Buhari was ahead of his time. His time has finally come.”

Injustice forced Amaechi, Kwankwaso others out of PDP – Mu’azu

Mu'azu Adamu jpeg

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Adamau Mu’azu, has identified injustice, inequity and unfairness as factors responsible for the defection of five state governors from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara) and ex- Governor Murtala Nyako (Adamawa) had in November 2013 defected from the PDP to the APC.
Similarly, a number of prominent party chieftains, including serving senators and members of the House of Representatives also left the PDP for the APC, owing to factors earlier identified by the PDP chairman.
Mu’azu, who spoke in Abuja at the inauguration of the PDP’s Presidential Campaign Organisation, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to consider the governors’ defection as a challenge ahead of the general election.
Decrying what he described as politics of use and dump, which according to him, was pervasive in the ruling party, Mu’azu said the trend, if not stemmed, could spell catastrophic consequences for the democratic process.
He said: “I appeal to President Jonathan to consider it a challenge to discuss with your governors, senators, all elected officials of the PDP that members of the PDP said they should not be used and dumped.
“Adhere to equity, fairness and justice, substantial membership of the APC, APGA and others are members of our party.
“A lot of our party members have left because they have been used and dumped. It should not happen again.”
Also speaking at the event, Jonathan said the performance of his administration would be his selling point during the electioneering campaign and urged his campaign team to be civil in the use of language.
Reiterating his promise of free, fair and credible elections, the President said 2015 poll marked a critical point in the nation’s history. Apparently referring to his major challenger, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, he challenged his critics to tell Nigerians how many women served in their administration.
The President said: “I am not campaigning to you, I have no doubt you are already familiar with the achievements of this administration.
“We will see those who said they would form a parallel government. Do not join them in violence, every Nigerian is free to campaign in every part of Nigeria.”

APC plotted to hack INEC computers —DSS

Ekpeyong Ita, the Director-General of the State Security Services (SSS)
The Department of State Service said that its investigations indicated that the All Progressives Congress had plans to hack into the computers of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The service explained that confessions from the number of staff arrested during a raid at the APC Data Centre at 10, Bola Ajibola Street, Ikeja, and the items retrieved from the building on November 20, 2014, showed that the party had elaborate plans to clone the INEC Permanent Voter Cards, corrupt the database and replace same with their own data.
The Deputy Director, Public Relations, DSS, Marilyn Ogar, who said this on Wednesday in Abuja at a news conference on the investigation into the APC Data Centre, further stated that the party registered babies and infants as well as security personnel as part of plans to inflate its membership.
According to her, all the people arrested during the raid have been charged to court and are currently on judicial bail.
The DSS stated that in the course of the investigation, it recovered a Temporary Voter Card and a Permanent Voter Card, adding that one of the hard drives recovered from the building contained a video of 21 hacking tutorials.
The tutorial video, Ogar added, focused on how to become a hacker and steps to take to avoid detection in the process of hacking web servers, steps and procedures of system hacking, passwords cracking, decrypting, escalating access privileges and creating backdoors to servers.
She further explained that the video also explicitly explained how to evade security of databases such as Intrusion Detection Systems, firewalls and other measures put in place to deter hackers.
The deputy director said that the video outlined ways to identify vulnerabilities in systems and how to surreptitiously drop a USB flash drive in a targeted establishment, which when plugged into any computer, transmits malicious codes enough to gain access into and compromise the entire system of the target organisation.
She said, “Finally, the video explains how to hack into the systems of media houses, with the aim of broadcasting fake stories or headlines.
“From the foregoing, we suspect that there was an elaborate and well articulated plan to inflate the party’s membership data as well as hack into INEC’s voter registration database through the creation of party membership forms and cards to match INEC’s voter register across the country.”
The service also said it discovered that the APC registered under-aged persons, including several infants and babies as members of the party, contrary to Article 9.1 of the party, which says, “Membership of the party shall be open to any citizen of Nigeria who has attained the age of 18 years and accepts the aims and objectives of the party…”
Similarly, she said, the APC registered several security personnel from the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps, among others, in their uniforms as members of the party.
Ogar said a DSS operative whose picture was found in the APC database, but with a wrong name, was being investigated and would be sanctioned if he was found to have voluntarily registered with the party.
The DSS stated that it had written letters to the different security agencies whose members were registered as APC members to determine their level of involvement with the party, stressing that security personnel were not supposed to be card-carrying member of any political party.
“Furthermore, the APC had multiple registration of individuals in multiples of 16, 12, and 10; several foreigners were also registered as its members,” Ogar stated, adding that the party filled forms without passport photographs and had books containing names of people with their phone numbers.
The DSS spokesperson also said that her agency discovered several envelopes containing passport photographs of various individuals. The photographs were shown to journalists during the news conference.
Ogar narrated that the service raided the APC office based on actionable intelligence it received that a building was being used for cloning of INEC Permanent Voter Cards by some unscrupulous persons with intent to hack into INEC database, corrupt it and replace same with their own data.
Upon receiving the said report, she said, the DSS immediately took appropriate steps to investigate same by first seeking and obtaining a search warrant as required by law. She insisted that the DSS operatives found that the building did not have the signpost, banner or flag of any company or political party.
Asked if the leadership of the party would be summoned or investigated, Ogar said further investigations would determine the next step, adding that necessary legal actions would be taken against all who were involved in the plot.
She said, “INEC was shocked by the operation and it had taken steps to protect its database. Whatever discoveries we have made is an eye opener to all of us. The APC was using the same INEC registration centres to do their own registrations and nobody knew what the underlying motive was. We are working with INEC and other political parties and we won’t allow any party to undermine the electoral process.”
…DSS findings flimsy, says APC
Niyi Odebode
The All Progressives Congress has dismissed the findings of the Department of State Service following its raid on the APC’s offices in Lagos, saying it is flimsy, partisan and an embarrassment to all intelligence-gathering agencies in the world
It said the ‘findings’ presented to the media by the DSS on Wednesday was a great disservice to Nigeria.
The party stated these in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.
It described the timing of the release of the ‘findings’ as a plot orchestrated in collusion with the Peoples Democratic Party to distract the APC from its ongoing campaigns.
The APC described as disingenuous, flimsy, premeditated and partisan, the conclusion that the APC had an ‘’articulated plan to inflate the party’s membership data as well as hack into the Independent National Electoral Commission’s voter registration database.
It said, “First, the DSS and the PDP said the APC was cloning Permanent Voter Cards at the raided office, without a shred of evidence. Now, after a ‘painstaking’ investigation, the DSS has found out that the APC was only planning to inflate its membership data and then hack into INEC’s database. And this is the outcome of its massive, months-long investigations?”
The APC wondered if the DSS report stood any serious scrutiny, adding that any serious intelligence-gathering agency anywhere else in the world would not take it (the report) seriously.
It asked, “Why would the spokesperson for a national agency sound like a megaphone for the ruling party, freely castigating the opposition spokesman and ‘’a number of uninformed members of the public’’? Why does she have to go personal in presenting a report that supposedly is in the national interest?
“We have always warned that our democracy is in clear and present danger, not just from desperate politicians, but also from institutions of state that have compromised in their roles and resorted to crass lawlessness. The DSS’ ‘findings’ today have given us another reason to repeat this warning.”
The APC said that while it was willing to meet the DSS in court, it could confidently say that the ‘confessions’ extracted from the arrested persons, after they were subjected to torture, could not even stand in any court of law.
The party recalled that in its statement of December 5, 2014, it accused the DSS of resorting to the use of torture to obtain confessions from those who were arrested during the first raid.
It said that in that statement, it called the action of the DSS a contravention of the United Nations Convention against torture to which Nigeria is a signatory and a violation of the citizens’ fundamental human rights.
“Now the DSS has confirmed what we said in that press statement. Is anyone still surprised at the action of countries that are distancing themselves from Nigeria over human rights violations?’’ He added.

Buhari’ll create 720,000 jobs —Osinbajo

Vice-Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo
The Vice-Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), says Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), will create 20,000 jobs in each state of the federation.
Osinbajo said this at the Osogbo City Stadium on Wednesday while addressing a crowd at the end of a 10-kilometre walk tagged “Walk for Change Nigeria.”
He lamented the massive youth unemployment in the country, saying the APC government would address this immediately if Buhari was voted in as the President in February.
He said, “We will provide 20,000 jobs in each of the states of Nigeria when we are elected.
“We will revive our agricultural sector by providing a ready-made market for farmers and encourage them, as the government will be purchasing their farm produce.
“Our government will also engage in feeding of our primary school pupils with free lunch across the country, just as we will embark on massive road construction.
“The elderly and the physically challenged would also not be left out as our government would be giving them allowances.”
Osinbajo said the party had a strong belief that its presidential candidate would be voted into power.
Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, while addressing the crowd challenged President Goodluck Jonathan to come out for a debate to defend himself on how he had run the country.
He said that Jonathan had not done anything to deserve a re-election.
Aregbesola stated that the President had fallen out of favour even among the cleric while drawing the attention of the people to the advice of Rev Fr. Ejike Mbaka, asking Jonathan to resign.
Aregbesola urged Nigerians to troop out and effect change through their votes in the February 14 election.
He said Buhari had resolved to turn around the fortunes of Nigeria for the better.

Some senior citizens are motor park touts –Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday condemned some politicians parading themselves as statesmen and senior citizens whereas, they are by their utterances, “ordinary politicians and motor park touts.”
He said such politicians could not be described as statesmen because of the big offices they occupied before but by virtue of what they brought to bear on the nation.
Jonathan spoke while playing host to a delegation of the Tanko-Yakasai-led Northern Elders Council in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Although the President did not mention names, former President Olusegun Obasanjo had on Monday said Nigeria was facing economic problems due to the failure of the present administration to plan for a rainy day.
Obasanjo had told Iyalodes and eminent women leaders from the South-West, who visited him at his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, that the nation’s reserves which as of 2007 stood at $67bn had been depleted by the Federal Government.
The former President had earlier written an open letter to Jonathan in which he accused him of tribalism, condoning corruption and training snipers.
But a visibly angry Jonathan told the Northern elders that   some people were hiding under big names to create problems for the country.
Jonathan also said that such people were in the habit of making unguarded statements with the aim of creating enmity.
The President said, “Some people call themselves statesmen but they are not statesmen, they are just ordinary politicians.
“For you to be a statesman, it is not because you have occupied a big office before but the question is what are you bringing to bear on the nation?
“Are you building this country? Or are you a part of the people who tell lies to destroy this country; to create enmity and make people who ordinarily would have been living together to fight themselves?
“Are you planning to set the country ablaze because you did not get that particular thing you want?
“At the appropriate time, Nigerians will know all of them even though I know most of such people. The younger ones do not know.
“Some people, including those with big names, are hiding under some clogs and creating a lot of problems in this country.
“They are making provocative statements that will set this country ablaze. How can someone tell   me that such people are   senior citizens. They are not   senior citizens and they can never be. They are ordinary motor park touts.
“If you are a senior citizen, you will act like one. It is not because of the offices we occupy, it is by divine grace and providence that some of us occupy these offices. But what role are you playing to build this country?”
Jonathan also used the opportunity to assure the delegation that he was not against the Northern part of the country.
He said whenever he heard about such accusation, he always turned to Vice- President Namadi Sambo who is from the North to ask if, indeed, he is anti-North.
The President listed his Principal Secretary, Hassan Tukur, and   his Chief Detail simply identified as Yusuf, as some of his close aides from the North.
Jonathan said because of his background,   he believed that the only thing that could liberate individuals was education.
He said that was why he insisted that nine out of the 12 new federal universities be located in the North.
Jonathan said, “I used to tell Nigerians that I come from a background people refer to as the Talakawas; I come from that level and I am here today talking to Alhaji Jimeta because I went to school.
“And I said the only thing that can liberate an individual or a group of individuals is education. If I had not gone to school, I wouldn’t have been here to talk to big people like these.
“If you didn’t go to school, you wouldn’t have spoken the way you spoke, you would have looked for somebody to interpret. This is what I believe. I don’t play politics with it. It has been my policy that I don’t play politics with education.
“When I came on board, I said even though as a country we have the policy on paper, every state must get a Federal Government university.
“Out of the 12 federal universities created, nine of them are in the North while three are in southern Nigeria. The only three states that had no federal university were Bayelsa, Ebonyi and Ekiti.
“Those who were in charge of the university establishment were not fair. For us to liberate ourselves, we must go to school. If I hate the North, would   I have done that?
“We talk about Almajiri education, we felt we must change. Luckily, we initiated it but now state governments are keying into it.
“I know that it was education that liberated me. I would have been a local canoe builder like my father and grandfather. But I am here because of education and I feel if we must liberate Nigerian children whether they are from Zamafara, Bayelsa, Kebbi or Delta state, they must be educated. I feel we must enter the North by aggression through education.
The President also referred to a newspaper publication (not The PUNCH) which, he said, indicated that the Federal Government awarded a few projects for the North-East and a chunk for the South-South.
He said he had reproduced copies of the publication and distributed them to   ministers with a directive to ascertain whether indeed projects were skewed in favour of a particular geopolitical zone.
Jonathan added that he directed the ministers that if the report was indeed true, they must explain the reason(s) to him.
He said despite all the negative campaigns against him and his government, he would not cheat any part of the country.
The President said, “For the people who want to paint us in all kinds of colour, we will explain to Nigerians. There are a lot of documentations we will show Nigerians.
“Let me reassure you that this administration is working with your sons and daughters; we will not exploit any part of this country; we will not cheat any part of this country.”
Jonathan also stressed the need for peace and unity in the country, saying there could be no development without the two factors.
He said he was saddened that young Nigerians were seeing the country as a divided one.
The President said, “I feel sad that our younger ones are beginning to see Nigeria as if we are so divided. A Nigeria that a Muslim and a Christian cannot sit down together.
“I was told that the driver of the late Prime Minister, Tafawa Balewa, was a Christian. Our people lived together in those days. Why not now that we have even modern ways of life?
“Any country that its citizens see themselves through their tiny tribal enclaves cannot go anywhere.”
Yakasai had in his remarks said   it was important for all Nigerians   to appreciate the fact that the country was crafted in such a manner that no one section   could rule without the support of the other.
He recalled that it was the North   that endorsed the principle of power shift which brought about the Presidency of Obasanjo and Jonathan.
He said it behoved on all Northerners and indeed, other Nigerians to continue to respect the principles of democracy.
Yakasai said, “Northern Elders Council believes in peaceful co-existence and extension of hands of fellowship to brothers and sisters from the other side of the nation.
“It is unpatriotic for anybody to instigate people against any person or peoples because of a temporary gain.
“Politics of insult, blackmail and castigation of individuals will not take this country anywhere.
“We therefore believe in peaceful co-existence among Nigerians and by working together shall we move the country forward.”

Buhari’ll turn Nigeria around —Lai Mohammed

Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)
National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in this interview with ENIOLA AKINKUOTU, speaks about the oncoming presidential election
Your party’s presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has been accused of several cases of human rights abuse and that he only jailed politicians who were non-northerners during his War Against Indiscipline campaign.
When a person is a military Head of State, that regime is a military one. The first thing a military Head of State does is to suspend the constitution. So, when the military comes in, the programme it implements depends on the circumstances that warranted the take-over. I was not young when Buhari took over. He came in against the backdrop of massive corruption, electoral heist and general indiscipline. The nation was in a shambles. It is completely untrue to say that he jailed some people from one part of the country and did not jail some people from another part of the country. Go and see how many Nigerians were imprisoned then. I know that when Chief Bisi Akande (now APC leader), was in prison, his closest colleague there was from the North. To me, it is a faulty argument to say he jailed only non-northerners. Was former Kano State Governor, Sabo Bakin Zuwo, (sentenced to 300 years in jail) also from the South-West? Was former Kaduna Governor, Abba Rimi, (jailed for 21 years) also from the South-West? Let us not stand history on its head.
Buhari has been accused of inciting the 2011 post-election violence through his comments.
Buhari spoke in Hausa in that interview on BBC Hausa and one problem with interpretation is that it is like a prostitute. When it is faithful, it is not faithful; when it is beautiful, it is not faithful. The context within which he gave the interview was misrepresented. This is just an attempt to taint his image. I was already working when Buhari came in and I can tell you that every Nigerian sat up. People were even afraid of taking bribes. People were queuing at bus stops. The only people who are afraid of a Buhari presidency are those who want to continue on the path of impunity and corruption. But more importantly, the issues that defined today’s politics in Nigeria are completely different. You need a man that can be in charge, you need a man that can stop corruption, a man that can stop insecurity. You need a man that can turn around the fortunes of Nigeria. You need a man that will stand up to say he will stop corruption and people will believe him. No corrupt government can fight corruption. Everything Jonathan needed to prosecute the war against insecurity was given to him by Nigerians. Money was given, a state of emergency was approved by the National Assembly three times but it is just beyond him. On the contrary, it is on record that while he was Head of State, Buhari rooted out the Maitasine terrorists from Gombe. As the General Officer Commanding 3 Division, in Jos, when some Chadian gendarmes were messing with Nigerians, he chased them all away. He is the only Nigerian who has been a Head of State, a military governor, head of the Petroleum Trust Fund and yet has no house in Abuja or Lagos. He has no other business apart from his military pension. This is the kind of man that Nigeria needs today. I am happy that Nigerians have now turned their backs on this government and are now clamouring for Buhari. That is the truth of the matter. So, they can spend their time vilifying this man. And those who say he is an extremist have forgotten history. When he was Head of State, his deputy (Tunde Idiagbon) was also a Muslim and he refused to drag Nigeria into the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation). Does that portray a person that is a religious fanatic? This is an historical fact. We all know who registered Nigeria under the OIC. So, if they don’t have issues to campaign on, they should stop trying to foul the air, let them sell their own candidate.
The Presidency says Buhari is too poor to be the President of this country and he has never run any industry and lacks economic experience.
You see, this man has run Nigeria before and when he did, within 20 months of being in office, he reduced our foreign debt which was about $4.6bn. Within that period, he ran a surplus budget. He refused to devalue the naira. He refused to remove subsidy from petroleum and refused to take a loan from the International Monetary Fund. And these are some of the reasons why he was overthrown. So, how can you say a man that has run the country before has no experience? This man was governor of the North-Eastern state which is six states today. He was Minister of Petroleum Resources for three and a half years and yet they say he has no experience. I think most times, they don’t reflect sufficiently when they make statements. In any case, when did poverty, honesty and integrity become a vice? I think the truth is that the APC has presented two candidates which you cannot objectively vilify. They are Buhari and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN).
The APC says it is a party of change. How does it plan to make this change and why should Nigerians vote for the party?
Our manifesto is clear. We have been able to identify the major problems of Nigeria which are: Insecurity, corruption, decayed infrastructure, unemployment and lack of access to welfare. Agriculture is no longer what it used to be and we have detailed in our manifesto how he will address the issues. The economy is down. We have said we will create three million jobs a year. And we also explained how we intend to create the three million jobs. We will invest massively in public works programmes such as building, extending and modernising the railway and road networks. We will invest in housing and agriculture. In the long run, we will move our economy from a mono-product economy which is over-reliant on oil and we will move it to value-added projects such as manufacturing and agriculture. In our manifesto, we explained that until the constitution is amended, especially in the area that concerns the Land Use Act, we will not be able to exploit the untapped wealth on our lands. Today, you even need the government’s permission to use your land to obtain credit. We are going to introduce a new regime of leaseholds and freeholds that will allow our farmers to move away from subsistence farming to large scale mechanised farming because 70 per cent of our population live in rural areas. Forty years ago we were the major producers of cocoa, rubber and palm oil but today, we import these things. Even in terms of food crops, there is no reason why northern Nigeria cannot become the food basket of the whole of Africa. With all the arable land that we have, all we need is government involvement that will promote and encourage agriculture. How do we do these, we will encourage every state to computerise all land titles so that if you want to buy land, you can easily access it on the Internet. It is so difficult to the extent that if I want to sell my house today, it could take up to 10 years before the buyer can get the complete title and how can he get a loan from the bank to even buy it? We will also go back to the era of the First Republic where agriculture was a local affair. We will have a loan guarantee for certain crops so that farmers can be paid in advance, they will know how much to expect from a tonne of cocoa or a tonne of coffee no matter what the global economy says. That way they can go into agriculture free of the fear of poverty. We intend to embark on poverty alleviation; we will take a lead from India and Brazil by making direct payments in form of social security. People ask us where we intend to get the money and we answer by saying that if Nigeria could survive a N2 trillion fraud in fuel subsidy and another N1 trillion in oil theft, then it is possible. If we plug those holes and re-invest the money in infrastructure and education, in a short time, we will become a power house because people don’t know what you can do with a trillion naira. It takes only $1m to generate one megawatt of power. With $1bn you get 1,000 megawatts. So, that missing $20bn can generate 20,000 megawatts of electricity. So, it is all in our manifesto. What they see as challenges, we see as opportunities. Yes, there are many bad roads as well as a housing deficit of 17 million. You can exploit this by employing people and getting them to do the work. You can imagine starting a railway line.
But the Jonathan administration says the railway has been transformed.
The question I would like to ask them is how many kilometres of rail road have they added? On the contrary, they have been unable to even revive a large percentage of the railway. Go to Makurdi today which used to be a major railway station. The place today has been overtaken by weeds. What the Jonathan administration did was to revamp some coaches. I think it was in The PUNCH that I read that a reporter said it took him four days to go to Kano and back. Is that the kind of railway that is worth celebrating? You see, if the railway was revived, I should be able to go to my village in Offa, Ilorin, with my family by train. I wouldn’t be spending timeless hours on the road. What is the capacity of these trains? How long would it take me to go from Lagos to Offa? Which is faster? Road or train? They should stop deceiving us.
But what is the track record of the APC in Nigeria?
The Yoruba say if someone offers you a dress, look at the ones he is wearing. Look at the things we have done. Go to Osun State today. Governor Rauf Aregbesola has employed over 100,000 through various schemes including the OYES (Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme). He has also introduced ‘Opon imo’ (tablet of knowledge) which is the first of its kind in the whole of Africa. With the little money in his care, every pupil is given a free meal a day. So, we are doing it and are showing the way. We are also doing it in Oyo where we have created thousands of jobs. Come to Lagos State and talk of power. Governor Babatunde Fashola has three IPPs (Independent Power Projects). There’s one in Ikeja, there is one in Lagos Island and the one that powers the waterworks. Go to Kano and Sokoto, there are also IPPs. In Rivers State, the governor has embarked on a metro scheme. How were Oyo, Ogun and Osun before 2011? How are they today? So, if we say we can stop corruption, then trust us.
The PDP says your party plans to form a parallel government if it loses.
That was not the direct phrase. We said if the elections are rigged, we will form a parallel government. It is just an emphatic way of saying don’t rig elections. Are they planning to rig elections? If I say, if you rape my wife, I will shoot you; I am just letting you know the consequence. Why should you rape my wife? If you are angry, it means you are planning to rape my wife. It is an emphatic way of saying elections must be free and fair. It is even a known fact all over the world that when elections are rigged, there are always consequences which range from violence to civil war. The civil war in Ivory Coast was caused by electoral malpractice. The First Republic collapsed not long after electoral malpractice, the Second Republic collapsed months after the elections. The June 12 elections which were annulled led to crisis. So, we are not saying anything new. When we speak against what is happening in the Army, the PDP twists our words and says we are promoting mutiny. You can’t send soldiers to the warfront without taking care of their welfare. We said we agree that once you join the Army, you are governed by the military laws and that mutiny and desertion are punishable by death but we are saying that the government owes it a duty that anyone enlisted in the Army must be well-equipped and trained. Soldiers have said they were given substandard ammunition and equipment. If they (Federal Government) had their children in the Army, would they want them to go to the war front in a singlet, holding a catapult? But this government has lost every sense of responsibility.

OAU students plot against Jonathan’s re-election over tuition

President Goodluck Jonathan
Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State have appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to reduce their tuition or be ready to face their wrath during forthcoming presidential election.
The Student Union President, Mr. Isaac Ibikunle, and the Secretary, Mr. Oludare Bamidele, stated this in a statement.
Jonathan met briefly with the student union leaders when he attended a political meeting organised by some Yoruba leaders in the university.
Ibikunle then told our correspondent that the President promised to act fast to reduce the fees in the university.
He noted that high tuition was making many students from poor background to drop out of school.
But in the statement on Monday, the student leaders said that students would work against the president if he failed to reduce the tuition.
It read, “The leadership of the students’ union has submitted a protest letter to President Goodluck Jonathan concerning the following demands among others: That our hiked fees be reversed to the status quo and embargo placed on increment in other federal institutions.
“That there is the need for improvement in the welfare of students vis-a-vis construction and equipping of qualitative hostels, lecture theatres, and laboratories.
“That the Federal Government should follow the UNESCO 26 per cent budgetary allocation to education and ensure its proper funding.
“Sunday, December 28, marks one full month of the President’s visit to our campus. Your Excellency, sir, we believe that our demands are the least your government can meet as far as education is concerned.
“We are not oblivious of the stressful demands of governance as well as efforts being made towards securing your second term in office. However, we as the conscience of the nation, consider meeting the few demands of ours as practically exigent national needs that could even have effect on your second term bid.
“Despite the six months of our life given to ASUU struggle in 2013, many of us have had cause to stay at home for some two or three more months in 2014 due to struggles against hike in fees. We in OAU may have no other option but to mobilise our rank and file against the Jonathan/Sambo second term campaign if these demands are not met immediately.”
