Study shows Sexual Dysfunction Common in Nigeria by Rebecca Ejifoma

A study of the prevalence and pattern of sexual dysfunction among 212 patients attending a general hospital in Benin City showed that 36.3 per cent had female excitement dysfunction, while 35.3 per cent had female orgasmic dysfunction.
The study also confirmed 26.4 per cent male erectile dysfunction, 20.9 per cent premature ejaculation, 7.3 per cent male dyspareunia, 3.9 per cent female dyspareunia and vaginismus at 3.9 per cent.
This was disclosed recently at a summit to mark this year’s pharmacy week in Lagos, where pharmacists came together under the aegis of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) to be lectured on a new product to enhance fertility rate in couples.
The summit with the theme, ‘Current Trends in Management of Female Sexual Dysfunction; The Power of Dietary Supplements’ introduced ADAM and EVE’s DESIRE capsules to participants for libido building and active sex among mature people so as to help them enhance their fertility rate.
Generally, it has been found that females reported significantly higher prevalence of sexual dysfunction than males and this has become worrisome for most couples as it often result into broken homes globally.
“Some of the causes of sexual dysfunction in women include physiological changes such as premenstrual syndrome, pregnancy, postpartum period and menopause.
“Others are endocrine disorders, thyroid, pituitary, adrenal gland problems, hormonal deficiencies, low testosterone, other androgens or oestrogens,” said Mrs. Mary Joe Ihejirika, Sylken’s Marketing Manager.
“It may also be due to lack of interest, lack of enjoyment or failure of physiological responses necessary for effective sexual interaction or inability to control or experience orgasms.
“For women, general anatomy, biological processes and age are all contributors to decreasing libidos. But it is important to many women to maintain their sex drive,” she added.
Mrs Ihejirika said: “There are medical solutions, such as hormone replacement therapy but due to the unexpected side effects and risks cautions must be exercised.”
She explained that Adam’s Desire is a product which has sold over 150,000 units since its introduction.
“There is a great need to fill the gap for the women who are critical stakeholders in the ‘bedroom business’. Eve’s Desire enhances libido and sexual response in women.
“It regulates hormonal levels in women. Eve’s desire supports a healthy endocrine system (thyroid, pituitary glands). Eve’s desire improves nutrient availability, digestion and absorption,” she said.
While educating participants on the new product, Ihejirika assured that ADAM and EVE’s Desire contains compounds such as Niacin (as inositol hexanicotinate): 10mg, Vitamin B6 as pyridoxal 5 – phosphate 1.25mg, Maca root powder: 150mg: American Ginseng Root extract 75mg, Wild yam root extract 75m, L-histidine (as HCl) 37.5mg, Soy isoflavones (from soy bean extract) 30mg. Others are Cytidine 5 – Diphospho choline (CDP – Choline) 25mg and 7-keto DHEA 7.5mg and Bioaccelerators blend, ginger root extract, long pepper fruit extract, black pepper fruit extract 7mg and NADH (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) 600mcg.
According to her several studies, including one published in the ‘Climacteric Medical Journal in 2001, showed that wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) may improve libido in menopausal women while also improving levels of sex hormones.
She said: “Diosgenin or wild yam is often promoted as a ‘natural alterative’ to estrogen therapy, so it is used for estrogen replacement therapy, vaginal dryness in older women, PMS (premenstrual syndrome), menstrual cramps, weak bones (osteoporosis), increasing energy and sexual drive in men and women.”
While it enhances sexual desire, response and performance, improves vaginal lubrication, promotes attainment of orgasm in women, regulates hormonal levels in women, EVE’S DESIRE is also said to improve nutrient availability and boost digestion and nutrient absorption.
Addressing the issue further, she stated that sexual dysfunction may be due to lack of interest, lack of enjoyment or failure of physiological responses necessary for effective sexual interaction. “It may also be due to inability to control or experience orgasms.”
Also speaking, a pharmacist,  Uche Nwana said that most of the women don’t talk about this issue since it is like a taboo in the country.
“So we have brought professionals together to go into communities and speak to the people. A lot of women have been having issues with sexual performance, which they hardly talk about,” Uwana said.
